Marriage is a beautiful, God-ordained covenant designed to reflect Christ’s love for the Church. This is a topic I have a heart for and I don’t think it gets talked about enough. I have studied this for years because it was something I struggled with especially early on in our marriage. Growing up, my church did not have a heavy focus on nurturing young ladies into wives. Though, I had a lot of biblical knowledge, I lacked in specific application when it came to my marriage. As wives, we are called to love, honor, and respect our husbands, not based on culture’s shifting standards, but on the unchanging truth of God’s Word. Loving your husband well is not about perfection but about faithfulness, grace, and intentional effort. He is not always going to be deserving because he is not Jesus. He is going to make mistakes, he is going to fail, just like WE DO! We do these things to honor God not to worship our husbands. Here are key biblical principles to strengthen your marriage and cultivate a Christ-centered relationship.
1. Love and Respect
“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.”
— Ephesians 5:33
The Bible teaches that husbands are to love their wives and wives are to respect their husbands. While love comes naturally to many women, respect can sometimes be more challenging. Respecting your husband means honoring his leadership, valuing his efforts, and speaking to him with kindness—even when you disagree.
2. Be His Helper
“And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”
— Genesis 2:18
God created Eve as a “helper” for Adam, a role that is powerful and meaningful. Supporting your husband doesn’t mean losing your identity, but rather using your strengths to encourage and uplift him. It also doesn’t mean lesser or encompase all men. Why wouldn’t we want to help the man we love? Ask yourself: How can I support his calling, his work, and his spiritual walk?
3. Communicate with Grace
“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”
— Proverbs 15:1
A gentle answer turns away wrath, while harsh words stir up anger. In marriage, our words have the power to build up or tear down. Practicing patience, active listening, and grace-filled speech helps foster healthy communication. I know this is easier said than done! Our culture accepts abrasive speaking and fosters selfishness. Only through leaning on the Lord can this be done.
4. Pray for Him Daily
“Pray without ceasing.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Prayer works! One of the most powerful ways to love your husband is to pray for him. Pray for his leadership, his faith, his work, and his struggles. Our husbands are on the battlefield everyday, he needs strength. When we surrender our marriages to God, He works in ways we never could on our own.
5. Cultivate a Servant’s Heart
“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
— Mark 10:45
Jesus exemplified servant leadership, and we are called to do the same. Serving your husband doesn’t mean being a doormat; it means loving selflessly. Small acts of service—whether making his favorite meal, encouraging him after a tough day, or simply expressing gratitude—can make a big impact. I think to much focus is put on serving everywhere else then the home. We should start in our homes first.
6. Keep Intimacy a Priority
“Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.”
— 1 Corinthians 7:3-5
Physical and emotional intimacy is an essential part of a thriving marriage. Amid the busyness of life, especially for moms, it’s easy to let this area suffer. Prioritizing time together, open communication about needs, and nurturing intimacy strengthens the marital bond. Additionally, this is an easy area to let the enemy win. We live in a sexualized culture it is a easy front for him to attack. Don’t allow this to be the place where the devil prevails.
7. Forgive Quickly
“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
— Colossians 3:13
Marriage involves two imperfect people! Let’s say that again….. Marriage involves TWO imperfect people and conflict is inevitable. Holding onto bitterness can create distance. Instead, choose forgiveness, remembering that Christ has forgiven us. A marriage built on grace is one that endures.
8. Encourage Him Spiritually
“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
— Hebrews 10:24-25
A godly wife encourages her husband to grow in his faith. This doesn’t mean nagging him to read his Bible…. Been there done that and makes matters so much worse; but rather we such be setting an example of faith, praying together, and gently encouraging his spiritual leadership in the home. I also think if I feel the attacks of the devil, how much more is he attacking my husband who is called to be the Leader of our home.
9. Enjoy Life Together
“Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.”
— Ecclesiastes 9:9
Marriage is not just about working through struggles—it’s also about enjoying the life God has given you together! Take time for date nights, hobbies, and making memories. Laughter and joy are gifts from God. Some of my favorite times are late night pillow talks and hysterical laughter between the two of us.
10. Trust God with Your Marriage
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
— Proverbs 3:5-6
It is so easy to try to do everything yourself. Then we get to a place where we ask God “why is it like this?” The answer is, it is because we chose to lean on our own will. At the end of the day, a strong marriage isn’t built on our efforts alone but on God’s grace. Trust Him with your relationship, seek His wisdom, and allow Him to work in both of your hearts.
Final Thoughts
Loving your husband well isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about being faithful, intentional, and surrendered to God’s plan for your marriage. By embracing biblical principles, you can build a marriage that not only lasts but thrives.
